Dear Maryville Community,
In light of the recent decision by the United States Supreme Court to reverse affirmative action in higher education, I find it essential to address our community and reaffirm our enduring commitment to access and opportunity.
It is clear the full implications of this decision will not be realized for some time, but I want to assure you that our resolve to cultivate an inclusive, diverse, and equitable learning environment remains unshaken. The richness of our community’s perspectives, experiences, and contributions relies upon a diverse student body, faculty, and staff, and we are committed to upholding this.
While our methods of ensuring equal access and opportunity will adapt slightly to align within the context of the law, our core vision will not change. We will continue to actively seek ways to encourage and facilitate the participation of underrepresented groups at our university. Diversity, and inclusion are integral to academic excellence and the fulfillment of our educational vision to provide access and opportunity for all.
To those students who might feel discouraged by this ruling, let me reassure you: Your place in this university and your potential to achieve at Maryville and in society is not defined by a single judicial interpretation. We believe in your abilities and in the value you bring to our community. We will continue to support our students, advocating for their access to higher education, and their success once they officially become a Saint.
In these times of change, we will not waver in our commitment to fostering an environment where everyone feels valued and has the opportunity to excel.
I look forward to working with all of you as we navigate this new chapter in our pursuit of access and opportunity for all.
With best wishes,
Dr. Mark Lombardi
